Cool Savory Velvet Decadence

Years ago, as a first-time waitress at a now-closed French/Creole restaurant in New Orleans, I learned how to make cappuccino, garnish with parsley (which I detest), and discovered what has

become my favorite soup. I was so broke in those early days, I absolutely lived off my shift meal, which always started with the largest bowl of Vichysoisse I could get and lots of French baguette. This soup was a sublime revelation. A few simple ingredients prepared easily meld into a decadent elixir. I know I'm waxing romantic, but trust me, this is more than soup.

With autumn and cool weather on the way, here's one last cold potage to say Au Revoir to summer!

Note - A lot of well-meaning people try to over-pronounce the name and sound smart by leaving off the S sound at the end of the name, like many French words. However, there are two SS's so you pronounce the S like a soft Z. VI-SHE SWAZ

Behold, the fragrant leek!

Vichysoisse a la Boheme

This is a rich soup, but I highly recommend you making it this way first, to taste its subtle

luxuriousness, before you change it and make it your own. As with everything, eat it in

moderation, with an otherwise light meal, and enjoy life!

Clean and chop 4 leeks (mostly white part, a little green is ok). Leeks are notoriously

gritty and it's really important to clean them thoroughly. Wash them first, then remove

the green and roots and make a cut through the leek, leaving about 1/2 inch at the end.

Turn it 90 degrees and make another cut through, fanning it out and rinsing it again

under running water, then cut 1/2 inch pieces and put them into a bowl of water.

Clean 4 to 5 potatoes and cut them into 1/4 inch slices. I prefer Yukon Golds. In the

original recipe, you would be instructed to peel the potatoes, but their thin peels don't

really "pollute" the smoothness of the soup and it's healthier. I put them in a bowl of

water too, to discourage oxidation.

Melt 2 tbsp butter in a large pot over high heat and add the drained leeks just as the

butter melts, then turn the heat down a bit, like medium/high. You don't want the leeks

to brown, but to "sweat" and soften. Stir occasionally and gently until they're soft and

translucent, about 10 mins.

Add in the drained potatoes and 3 cups of chicken stock (or veggie stock) to cover them.

If they're not completely covered, add more stock until they are. Cover with lid and turn

down the heat to a low simmer for 30 mins. When the potatoes are cooked through, turn

off and remove the pot from the heat and wait for it to cool. When cooled, take the

mixture in a few ladle-full batches and puree thoroughly in a blender or food processor,

adding in 1 cup of milk to one of the batches.Put the entire puree in a large bowl, then

blend in 1 1/2 cups of cream, 1 1/2 tsp sea salt and 1 tsp white pepper (or to taste).

Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate until completely cold. The cold really makes

a difference and I suggest making this a day in advance,to give the flavors a chance to

meld into perfection. Serves 4 generously. Don't forget the baguette to go with!!!

A good movie to watch, while sinking your teeth into this silky wonderful,

is Interview With A Vampire. It's a delicious French/Creole story that was filming

in New Orleans when I lived there. Later I was lucky enough to get invited to

Anne Rice's Halloween Party at her ex-convent haunted mansion, when she was

still the queen of the goths.

Synchronicity With a Gold Belt

Not long ago, I woke up from a dream obsessively thinking about a gold stretch belt I loved and

wore in high school, wishing I still had it and wondering why I ever let it go. A few weeks later,

I'm in Wasteland in Studio City, and discover a similar gold stretch belt, only $14, with a clasp

detail I actually prefer to the original. For some reason the universe wanted me to have this belt!

Who am I to argue with the fashion gods?

Can you see the monkey face the belt creates with the pillow? Love it when that happens!

A Cold Taste of Spain

Moi and la Cuisine were never close friends, despite my loving cookbooks since I could

read and growing up watching all sorts of cooking programs and food-centered movies.

Lately though, I'm finding cooking inspiration and I want to share it with you!

I love soup and one of my favorites is perfect for hot summer weather, Gazpacho.

There are several versions, but I based this recipe on Gazpacho I once had at this groovy

Spanish restaurant in New Orleans many years ago. It's light, flavorful, healthy and

extremely easy to make!

This is one of those recipes that is open to interpretation, so I'll give you my appx.

amounts/measurements, but you can adjust anything to your taste. When I decide

to make any dish, I look up several versions of the recipe to get an idea of how its

done, then make it my own.

Allow me to suggest... Pay attention to your ingredients, buy the best you can afford,

organic when you can, because there is nothing healthy or tasty about petroleum-based

fertilizers and pesticides nor animal hormones and antibiotics, that are finally being

studied regarding their dangerous effects, but not yet regulated in any meaningful way.

Remember, everything you eat has an effect on your health and happiness.

BOHEMIAN GAZPACHO

Take 1/2 loaf of bread (I use a French loaf or baguette), tear into 2 inch-ish pieces,

put into a bowl and cover with water, set aside. I take the other half, slice it and

make crostini for tapas.

Into your blender or food processor put after washing:

1 cucumber - chopped into 1 inch pieces (no need to peel unless it's waxy)

1 1/2 lb tomatoes (I used roma) - end removed and cut in half

1 red bell pepper - cut into 1 inch pieces

2 cloves garlic - peeled

2 cloves shallot - peeled

Pulse until everything is smooth, NO chunks or bits. You can put aside any of the veggies

and chop finer, if you want to garnish with them.

Then take the soggy bread to your sink and take it by the double-handful and squeeze out

as much excess water as possible, adding it to the blender as you go, transforming the soup

from reddish to pinkish as you process.

Then add and blend in for taste:

Juice from 1/2 large lemon - appx 4 tblsp

Splash of olive oil - appx 3 tblsp

Splash of sherry vinegar - appx 3 tblsp

3/4 tsp salt - use mineral or sea salt

1 tsp ground cumin

Take the soup (either still in blender or transferred to serving bowl) and refrigerate until cold.

It's best made a day in advance, so the flavors can meld and do their magic.

This serves 4 generously. You will be amazed at how flavorful such simple ingredients can be!

Make your visit to Spain complete by serving this with tapas and watching a beautiful film by

my favorite Spanish director, Pedro Almodovar, Talk to Her (2002).

I GOT GIFTED!!!

Back in February... my dog Charlie got caught red-pawed making a snack out of my

Cosabella panties, as chronicled here. This led to my discovery that the company

was going to redo the style I wear, the Soire Lowrider Boyleg. I was concerned since this is the

only underwear I've been wearing for years, having suffered thru years of trial and panty error,

including a few-years stint of wearing mens tightie whities.

sigh.

So imagine how delighted I was to get this lovely pair of the new style, the Soire Lowrider Hotpants,

to try along with a gift certificate for another pair! My first gift!!! And how do they fit and feel,

you may ask? Perfectly. My concerns allayed, I'm about to order my free pair! Hmm... what color?

What The Waters and Frida Give Me

As a birthday treat to myself (Gemini's Rule!) I took a few days respite at one of my favorite

get-aways, The Spring in Desert Hot Springs. The hot mineral waters can cure a weary body and

the windy quiet (no children) combined with sounds of desert life can heal the psyche.

I like it particularly because it is small (12 rooms) and has a covered pool (in addition to 2 others),

so I can soak in minerals without soaking in sun on my porcelain complexion.

I took my Diana F+ with me (needed to finish off a year-old roll of film), so while contemplating

life and meaning in the universe, and liking how the nail polish (Geranium by Essie)

was set off by the blue water and tiles, I took this shot, inspired by this painting by Frida Kahlo.

May you all find creativity and inspiration in every moment!

All Sorts of Wrong

Imagine if you will...

Going to check out a new neighborhood joint, the Fat Dog, just north of Melrose on Fairfax...

Ordering the Fat Dog, described as a grilled beef hot dog w condiments...(nothing more)

Then watching your waitress cross the entire restaurant with a GIANT 12-inch hot dog on a small

6-inch bun that serves no other purpose, but to accentuate the size of this OBSCENE piece of meat.

I have never in my life EVER blushed at food, but there really is a first time for everything.

When the waitress asked if I needed anything else, I replied... my dignity back.

I promptly (faster than ever in my life) cut the damn thing in half, then half again

and tried vainly to make the hot dog fit somehow in the bun, but to no avail...

It was impossible to eat with any decorum and it wasn't tasty enough to compensate.

Enough meat for 2 hungry people - but only barely enough bun for 1/2

The bun isn't cut all the way thru, great for showing GIRTH, not so great for eating like a human being.

Not once was I told how big this monstrosity was going to be! I'm a small person, after all.

This is the most illogical and overpriced ($10 and $4 for ice tea, yeah) hotdog EVER.

A Tale of Two Artworks

After following a nonsensical trail of arrows in my neighborhood last Sunday,

like Alice in a maze... I happened upon a sweet little garage sale.

Only $10 for this original vintage (60's?) 12x12 mixed media (paper/watercolors/wood) beauty!

With a BONUS personal note from the artist to the former owner.

This is one of the reasons I love vintage/2nd hand treasure...

discovering mysterious pieces to another's life! What's the story?

The tone of the lovely lady selling this painting and her willingness to unload it by

offering it for $5, gave me the impression that her ex painted this... in happier days.

Now the painting can be a source of happy again.

Charlie demanded to be in this pic and who am I to say no to such a stylish pooch?

Melrose Trading Treasure

It's been a while since I had a good haul from The Melrose Trading Post,

but I hit the jackpot a few weeks ago!

At last, a mirror for the bedroom - $25!

I love the surreal Dali-effect on the right, that's distorting the

image of the cheap Ikea storage thingie I refinished years ago.

The tree branch on left is from the tree mentioned here.

Gorgeous, hand-blown and sunny little glasses (much smaller than they appear) - $10

Vintage Italian glass coasters - $10

These lovely silk scarves were a gift by the gentleman

who sold me the glasses and coasters! He used the scarves to wrap

and create a way to carry them. That's class.

Isabella Blow, A Life in Fashion

Isabella Blow was a fascinating woman who transformed her insecurities and pain into

a shield of artful fashion originality, thus carving herself a place in fashion history

that will continue to inspire and influence creative people for ages to come.

She was a tragic and beautiful muse...

befriending and promoting Alexander McQueen and

tomorrow's Royal Wedding Milliner, Philip Treacy.

A truly original character, who left the world,

sadly, more beautiful for her having been in it.

Even her flaws were larger than life and outrageous!

This is not a fluffy bio about fashion,

but a interesting look into a generation of British Nobility

that was raised to be ill-equipped to face any sort of reality,

as well as the take-over of the creative/fashion world by

corporate interests (in the 90's), more interested in bottom lines

than hemlines or the fragile personalities that worked in it.

I learned so much more than I anticipated when I picked this book

and I had a hard time putting it down. A very good sign!

1. Eliminate toxic petroleum and chemical-based perfumes/candles and switch to

fragrances (body and home) that use nature-based ingredients.

I'm a big fan of Pacifica products!

2. Launder everything in cold water - saves energy/$ and fabrics last longer.

Use plant-based detergent and softeners.

3. Make QUALITY NOT QUANTITY your mantra.

I'd rather have nothing than something cheap, mass-marketed and disposable.

Love everything you wear or bring into your home!

Do some spring-cleaning, clear your space and mind, and donate your excess.

4. Bring your own bags when shopping.

I'm still waiting to win the Bag Raffle at Trader Joes...

after bringing my own bags for 8 years!!!

5. Plot a circular car-route when you go out to save time and gas.

6. Recycle everything.

7. Save money and express your individuality by buying vintage and second-hand

clothing and decor. Besides, nothing beats the thrill of the hunt!

We only have one planet and it's already in serious trouble.

It's so easy to make little changes that have large impacts.

Not Just Any Waffle...

This plate used to hold my first ever Liege Waffle savory sandwich (blackforest ham and smoked gouda cheese) from a new favorite cafe/restaurant, Shaky Alibi.

The red puddle at the top is actually Trappey's Hot Sauce that the gracious owner recommended to try with the waffle, and was he right!

Sweet, salty, smoky, with a touch of spicy sour heat... Perfection.

Cosabella Carnage

A few weeks ago I left the apt for 20 minutes, only to return and discover my rascally dog Charlie finishing off the crotch to my Cosabella panties, that he dug through and removed from my dirty laundry I naively left out.

BAD DOG!

This led me to order a few replacement pairs and discover they're discontinuing/retooling the style I wear, the Soire Lowrider Boyleg. I hope I still like them when they change, because nothing else fits me this perfectly.

Yummy on a Bun x 2

Fresh lobster + toasty bun + butter = sheer shellfish heaven.

The lobster roll from the Lobsta Truck isn't cheap $11,

but a good value as the sweet lobster is generous. I've had it twice already!

My only complaint is waiting time seems longer than necessary.

I'm always on the lookout for a tasty hotdog and The Greasy Wiener is a new favorite.

For under $6 I got the original greasy wiener

(mustard, grilled onions and a pickle spear),

without any extra toppings (as I like my food simpler), and a soda.

It was so tasty (very flavorful/well seasoned dog), it really didn't need anything else.

I raved about this for days (and craving the next)... a hot dog!

It wasn't until I looked at them in my iPhone did I detect a possible connection.

Is the universe or my subconscience telling me something? Or is a pickle just a pickle?

No jar, no glass... just flowers, cigarettes and a pretty pickle pattern.

These were found alone on the sidewalk, carefully placed there by somebody else.

My geeky little mind thinks of ancient Roman graffiti when I see this.

Wondering if this is an insult... or a compliment? HA!

I Met a Fashion Angel!

How my 20 year old pick-up truck got me a free belt (a true fashion adventure)!

I've had a few groovy interactions due to driving my old white beast (name of Bettie),

but this was by far the best.

A few weeks ago I was gassing up Bettie on 3rd street, when this gentleman (60's ?) in all black, with a belt (like pictured) and cap to match, walked by and commented on how much he missed his old junker of a truck...and from there the conversation turned to how he's lived in LA for a long time, how he was once part of the music scene, and finally, how he designed the belt and hat he's wearing and that his stuff had been featured in Japanese magazines, etc.

He was real sweet (no smarm), no strange vibes (got LA radar for that), and he mixed in some great peace/love gems into the mix, so I was happy to listen and experience the genuine moment, one human connecting to another.

A few minutes went by, we said our good-bye and I was about to drive away,

when he flagged me to wait for a sec as he went to his Mustang

(he was waiting for it to get washed) and pulled out a stack of belts.

"What size are you?" and "More rock-ish or feminine?"

"Small and feminine"

He took one of the belts and gave it to me, then showed me the Japanese

magazine blurb. We chatted for a few more minutes, then I went on my way.

His name is Sky, and I love the belt.

Extra Extra! One Skank Too Many on a Cold and Rainy Day

As you all have read earlier, I've been endeavoring to make a silk purse out the minimum wage sow's ear called "extra" work by looking at the positives and taking creative moments where I found them. All the while getting food poisoned (you haven't lived till you've vomited 6 times in a port-o-john), serious sunstroke (14 hours outside in Santa Clarita in July), freezing in the winter (cause it's supposed to be summer), burning in the summer (wearing full winter gear outside in August), numerous blisters from shoes that aren't meant for lots of walking (thanks costumer!)... getting the picture?

All of these negatives came into crystal clear focus the day I had to work on an upcoming tv show called Franklin and Bash, downtown a few weeks ago, on a freezing, windy, rainy day.

This was not the first time I was cast as a hooker/skank/bar whore/swinger (such a class act!), BUT this was the first time that it made absolutely no sense. In a group of appx 100, most were dressed in "legal" wear or police uniforms,while myself and one other lucky gal got to be dressed to thrill. Since it was supposed to be summer, no outer wear was allowed, so I was given a corset top that was cut down to my bellybutton, a skirt that barely covered my tush and a 5-inch pair of hooker heels. At my insistence, I got a low-cut tank to go under the corset and tights so that my ass wasn't out in the wind. Somehow the other chick was given a leather jacket. Oh yeah, I grumble, cause this same girl found a way to disappear and not have to work... all day. So in a group of people dressed normal, you have one person, ME dressed as a major whore, getting attention I do not want (thanks creepy guys!), AND FREEZING in the rain cause we weren't allowed our coats. Then the one shot I got placed in, I got pulled and sent to the far back for the rest of the day (something very frustrating that happens almost every time - what can I say... I have charisma!).

Since Hollywood hookers don't have pockets I got to keep my iphone here all day... yep.

Downtown politics is dirty smoky business.

In addition to the above, I didn't eat breakfast due to the long costume line, and got to enjoy what cleaning a port-a-john smells like up close, so by the end of that 13-hour day,

I was feeling the utter humiliation of being a prop, totally at the whim of every

person above me on the production totem pole.

So when I got booked on a large, outside call in the middle of nowhere at 6am the next morning, I told them to SHOVE IT. Life's too short to feel that miserable for minimum wage on something that does nothing to advance my acting or writing goals.

So THANK YOU Franklin and Bash for being that one straw too many! I'm happier already.

Now would be a great time for a visionary producer to pick up my pilot script...

Rainy Day Photo Adventure

Last Wednesday, LA experienced a classic downpour and afterwards I took a long walk around my Melrose neighborhood and its alleys with my Charlie-dog, taking pics. The day before had been particularly tough and trying (post on that to follow), so I was in dire need of the inspiration and invigoration.

Extra Extra! My Day at Disney...

Par for my journey as an actress/writer/everything-else, is my taking occasional work as a background player, aka... the extra. Being an extra is rather thankless work, as we are largely nothing more than props that have to be wrangled, costumed, fed, herded, directed, and generally put up with (for mostly minimum wage). We're lower on the totem pole than unpaid interns! However I love being on-set, watching professionals at the top of their game, taking mental notes (for my future producer days), and sometimes I get directed, as if I were an actual actress!

There's also A LOT of sit-around-do-nothing-for-hours! What to do with all that time? A lot of people eat their way through the free craft services (if it exists), some bring reading material/computers/etc, but mostly I find strangers coming up to me telling me things that they should reserve for their priest/shaman/guru.

In an effort to add creative sanity to what can be a long long, crazy, draining day...

I'm documenting parts of my trip down the Hollywood rabbit hole.

My first time on the Disney lot afforded me ample opportunities.

After a year of playing skanky bar whores (why why why?), I got to be a detective on ABC's new show, No Ordinary Family. Here's my first badge ever! It went well with my Marc Jacobs top (from Crossroads Trader) that the costume dept let me keep on. Just cause I'm a cop doesn't mean I can't have style!

I think every person with a brain can relate to this.

This guy didn't move from the time we got there to the time we left, six-ish hours later.

After the scene in the studio, me and my car drove to the location for my car's close-up... yeah, my car got the kind of coverage I would dance naked for... or something like that... you know what I mean!

This was my best time yet on-set, sitting in the grass, talking about photography with some of the real nice crew. I was told Danny DeVito likes to take pics of his feet too! Great minds perhaps?

I never go anywhere without my parasol, it preserves my porcelain pale complexion.

The director noticed me enough to call me Mary Poppins (how VERY Disney!)... helllo Mr Director!!!

Food, Fashion and Fun Downtown...

Spent a lovely afternoon adventure downtown, with my dear friend Amy of A Sunny Day in LA.

First was lunch at Church and State... my first time there!

I enjoyed the Tart Flambee with caramelized onions, gruyere and lardons (with lovely olives and bread to start).

The carnage from Amy's Seafood Bourride begged for a pic...

Next... we were off to FIDM for their Emmy costume display and the Alice in Wonderland exhibit.

No picture taking allowed inside... but nothing to stop me from taking a fashionable reflection pic!

We then hit Goodwill, but nothing called to me.

So we wandered a bit here and there... experiencing the downtown vibe, when I came across this...

This sign has clearly been in use since the 70's. Oh, if only it were for sale!!!

I'd love to see what the clientele looks like, but the two lovely ladies who work there were just off to the side, chatting and watching the passers-by.

I finished the day with Rocky Road ice cream from the Grand Central Market, but gobbled it too quickly to take any photos. I'm sure you understand...

Mon Dieu It's July!

The past two months have flown by and I'm in a bit of a daze.

Now it's looking like the next two months will be more of the same...

In a nutshell... my life has been about:

A rescued Chihuahua named Charlie (my first pet!) and rehabilitating him with love.

Landlord discovering Charlie the ONE time he barked only one week after getting him.

Looking for new apartment.

My birthday - quiet and low-key this year.

Leaving town to take care of ailing relative (everything turned out fine).

Finding new apartment - on my way to Melrose Place!

NOW:

Organize! Toss out! Store! Sell! Donate! Rinse... Repeat!

Move... and all the delightful chaos that ensues.

Turn the new abode into a bohemian paradise.

Make friends with the new neighborhood - will now have farmer's market in walking distance.

So I beg your patience, darling readers, during this time of many transformations.

I know many new adventures are on their way.

BE GOOD TO YOURSELVES THIS SUMMER!!!

Springtime Flea Market Treasures

From the Melrose Trading Post - this flea market made me happy about moving to LA 10 years ago...

This particular trip was a golden one... judging from my gilded haul!

My first find of the day was this $15 vintage gold tassel necklace.

This lovely golden pearl trio ring $20 was bought from the jewelry-maker herself. Pearls are my birthstone...

More pearly golden fun for $3... now I can be the girl with the pearl earring(s)!

This great goldie purse $15 has a nice long strap so I can wear it cross-body.

I've decided to start collecting vintage glass grapes and here is my first bunch, only $5!

The day was finished off with this golden, sweet, tart and luscious lemon bar from the yummy, new and French patisserie, Plaisir!

And then...

Last month I finally made it back to the Rosebowl Flea Market, after about 6 years, to spend the day treasure hunting with my darling friend Amy of A Sunny Day in LA, who was celebrating her birthday!

I've been a fan of Enid Collins' vintage bags for years, so this pristine little number caught my eye in the back corner of this otherwise dingy booth full of knick-knacks. I was expecting a high price, so imagine my delight when the lady only wanted $20! To be honest, there's isn't any signature, so it could be a repro of some sort, but I don't care, cause I love it!

These gorgeous peacock feathers were $5 for 6... something else I've been wanting for a while!

Wondering what treasures this summer will bring my way...

Vintage 1960's Faux-Ostrich Purse From Cherry Pick Vintage

Et voila!

Back in March, Tasha from one of my fave LA blogs, Blackburn and Sweetzer, wrote about a new vintage store in Los Feliz, Cherry Pick Vintage, so of course I had to check them out! Upon clicking on the link provided, I was directed to their Etsy Store and I discovered this fantastic vintage faux-ostrich purse with great hardware and the perfect color for both spring and fall, for a very reasonable $68 (a splurge for me). It's from the 1960's, with great quality/construction and nobody believes it's faux when I show them (lots of compliments - a nice bonus). Nina (the owner?) also included the loveliest card, real class! Next time I'm in their 'hood, I will definitely be checking out their store, while hoping I don't get too carried away...

Review - Seoul Town Tapas at Breadbar

Grilled Nutella Sammie w/ Pain de Mie and Blueberries

Last Saturday night, the Mister and I wandered over to Breadbar on west 3rd, to dine at chef Debbie Lee's pop-up restaurant, Seoul Town Tapas, a modern take on Korean Pub Grub. Oddly enough I haven't seen/read any reviews, considering how much coverage Ludovic Lefebvre received at the same location, twice.

Here are my thoughts:

This type of venue/menu would be a nice permanent addition to the neighborhood, but it isn't "destination" food that draws "foodies", hence the lack of buzz. Everything we ate was simple and enjoyable, but not necessarily worth driving across town for. Chef Lee needs to make sure that wherever she plans her permanent location should have heavy foot traffic.
Her menu would actually work really well as a food-truck concept.
My faves were the daikon kimchee amuse bouche, the curry hummus w/wonton crostini, the chicken meatball (tasted like sweet/sour chicken) and the ultra-yummy (soon to be recreated at home) grilled nutella w/ blueberries sandwich (pic above).
Prices were good, but I thought $16 was a bit much for the Korean Fried Chicken. I have a very high bar when it comes to fried chicken, and I only enjoyed it $10's worth.
Chef Lee would benefit from coming out of the kitchen from time to time. I like it when chefs connect with their diners, even if it's minimal.
Am planning on returning before this ends on April 10th, since it's an easy and walkable few blocks away. Will definitely try another dessert and forgo the fried chicken.

Tale of My Giving Tree

For the past 10+ years, one of my favorite aspects to my apartment has been the old, large and lush tree that belonged to the house behind our building. It provided fantastic afternoon shade, was often the stage for various critter (squirrel/possum/raccoon/birds birds birds) comedies and dramas and I loved watching the different shades of green that would emerge as the changing daylight would dance with the leaves, causing me to aptly name it - The Hypnotree.

Two months ago, I awoke to the sounds of chainsaws and looked out the window to witness the house's new owners having the tree taken down. I actually felt my heart sink. And since it was such a large tree, it took the entire day to cut it down, an entire day of chainsaws, sawdust and sadness. I'm not the weepy kind of gal, but I cried that day.

Fortunately (I say that lightly) the tree-guys let a lot of stuff fall down on our side of the fence, so I took piece of a larger branch that I plan on carving into a tactile sculpture piece, a long skinny leafless branch that is looking great as it lays against the wall outside the front door and the end of a branch that was still green and viable. It was my hope to get it to root somehow, so I took it and placed it in a vase and kept it next to the bed, on top of two of my favorite Tom Robbins' books that I'm re-reading (pic above).

For two months the little branch (now named Penelope - gold stars to those who can guess why) seemed to thrive, and was even continuing to grow a leaf on the end... then last week she suddenly started turning black and was dead in two days.

Adieu my darling giving tree... never will you be forgotten.

Ojai is my idea of the perfect weekend LA getaway:

Less than a two-hour drive - gods willing
No corporate chain stores/restaurants (far edge of town not included)
Three thrift stores and a great antique store - perfect for treasure hunting
One of the best used-book stores
A lovely park in the middle of town and a clock tower that chimes the hours
Trees Trees Trees
Colorful flowers/cacti
A decent mix of restaurants and a nice cafe
Friendly locals and an artistic community
Easy walkability
Horses!!! They're everywhere. People even rode them to brunch! (pics to come)

Auto-Archeology or Digging For My Childhood on Ebay

There were two very obscure items from my childhood that left a lasting impression...

Sally Goes Shopping Alone (1940) tells of little Sally's adventures on her first shopping trip alone to the big department store in order to surprise her Mummy with a birthday gift, while getting her doll a bathrobe, new ribbons for her hair and a pair of rainboots! I used to read it at my grandmothers, but like many things, got lost somehow. To this day, this book influences how I prioritize my goals (shopping and otherwise) and reminds me how things will work out, even if it's not as planned. What's particularly fun is how knowledgeable and helpful the people who work in the large department store are, and how they would send any packages you couldn't carry to your home the next day!!!

Money Card (1972) may be why I still aspire to global bohemian jet-setting. You travel around Europe, with the goal of acquiring keys to the glamourous cities and if you have the "money card" you can charge your expenses!!! Nothing like teaching 7 year olds how to get into debt... albeit in a stylish and cosmopolitan way! The game belonged to a neighborhood friend, and I never found it anywhere else or met anyone who ever heard of it.

A couple of years ago, I got a yen to find both of these long-lost treasures, partly to see if I could find them at all, and you can imagine how tickled I was to discover them on Ebay and for cheap (especially since Ebay tends to be $$$ these days). Now they can continue to inspire and make me smile till the end of my days.

The only other thing left I wish I could find is this strange breakfast cereal-like stuff that I was given in early childhood, but never seen since. I think it had the name "concentrate" in the title, came in a small, metallic-papered box with a metal spout and was made up of very tiny flakes (not sure what grain, maybe corn). Seriously I wish I could remember more, other than I really liked the taste. Major golden karma to anyone who can point me in the right direction with this, though I think it may be impossible...

Sunday Strawberry Sweet

Sweetie-pie surprised me today with a strawberry macaroon from Breadbar and it was large enough for us to share.

Though a larger and bit denser interpretation from traditional macaroons (I miss Boule), I enjoyed this pretty pink perfection and look forward to trying their vanilla and coffee flavors.

Silverlake Dress Treasure

This sweet little sundress from the Silverlake Flea Market was my reward yesterday for surviving unscathed (except mentally) 2 very close-call near-miss car crashes (someone ran a red on Robertson-almost hitting pedestrians and us and a bus almost turned into us) AND then experienced (but actually didn't witness - heard it then looked up to see the aftermath) a crash on Fountain... all within a 30 minute period. My absolute strangest and unsettling driving day in the 10 years I've been driving here.

But Sweetie-pie and I made it and joined friend Julia and her Steve, first for Kogi (our friend's first time!) then for a little treasure hunting therapy. I was expecting a larger event, but it had a good showing of vintage clothes vendors. Sweetie-pie first saw the dress and pointed it out (love it when he does that) and I returned the favor by finding him a great navy wool cardigan, both priced at $15

It appears to be handmade and I'm contemplating shortening it a bit, without messing with the too groovy scene and I'll wear it with a vintage leather belt.

This is my first vintage treasure find of the year!!! Great start if you ask me...

Serious Lamp Love

Last week I mentioned my lovely lovely cream/gold table lamps that I recently brought out and placed in the bedroom and office... et voila! I got the pair for about $35 (if memory serves) from a now-gone shop in San Luis Obispo, CA and got the shades at Target, though I am keeping an eye out for a perfect vintage shades. I look forward every night to turning them on. What we put in our homes should make us happy, all the rest is just clutter.

Total Beverly Hills Moment

After a long day of errand running and an audition (the lead in a UCLA student film - keep fingers crossed), I went to my bi-monthly mani/pedi appt. at Contempo Nails on Robertson, just north of Olympic, where I've been going for a couple of years. It's got a funky mix of clientele, and it's often a great place to people-watch, not to mention inexpensive.

As I'm waiting for my newly-red nails to dry, an older gentleman, plainly dressed, but with a large multi-diamond ring on his left hand, clearly a regular (think I've seen him there before), sits down as several of the Vietnamese beauty-techs start fluttering around him, as he's there for the full mani/pedi/massage treatment.

In comes a woman whose car is being blocked in the rear parking lot by somebody's Mercedes, and she asks everyone if they own a Mercedes, to which this gentleman responded with a chuckle (and loud enough so we all could hear him) "I don't have a Mercedes, I have a Bentley."

Needless to say I laughed out loud and looked at him. I guess being rich isn't enough unless everyone knows it.

The Month of Janus

January is named for the Roman god Janus, the god of doors/gates and beginnings/endings. For me January means taking stock of absolutely everything I can think of in my life. It's not just about resolutions, it's about starting the new year with a totally clean slate and inviting new energy in. I fix what needs to be fixed, change what needs to be changed, clean out the no-longer-useful and address any nagging loose ends, so all I have to do is look forward.

Patched two holes in bedroom wall left over from when it was an office.
Brought out from storage 2 gorgeous vintage gold/cream table lamps that I bought over 5 years ago, got 2 inexpensive shades at Target (until I find the perfect vintage shades) and put one in the bedroom next to bed and the other in the office. Pics to come soon.
Cleaned out clothes closet/linen closet, bathroom cabinet, drawers et al...
Cleaned out 6 pairs of shoes I no longer wear and some accessories that were more shabby than chic. I made a few $$ selling to Crossroads Trader and donated the rest to Out of the Closet. NEVER THROW ANYTHING USABLE/WORKABLE IN THE TRASH - DONATE DONATE DONATE!!! I cannot get over all the perfectly useful items I find in the garbage that could go to people less fortunate and instead end up adding to our land-fill problems.
Found 2 maxi-dresses I never wear, but I think they'll be perfect re-worked and shortened... so off to the tailor.
Took out my first vintage fur (cute short brown mink jacket I got on Ebay for $25 in 2003!) that has been hiding in my back closet since I accidentally tore both sleeves in a hasty moment three years ago, and I patiently (hours upon hours) sewed the rips until good as new. Wore it for the first time on our rainy LA Sunday!
Needless to say... I cleaned cleaned cleaned! And I still have a little more to do...

By the end of the month I will... (weather permitting)

Take headboard that I got from friend/neighbor Lisa last year, add one foot to its height, prime it and paint it a brighter white (thinking about lacquer).
Re-pot and re-work some plants in the backyard.
Decide whether I'll repaint (gold, currently black) a vintage plant-stand I got last year from the Melrose Flea Market or put it in storage for now.

What I'll be looking for in 2010

I hate everything in the bathroom... so I'm looking for a new shower curtain and artwork.
May finally find a way to put up curtains over the kitchen windows.
Need a tablecloth for free-from-moving-out-neighbor kitchen table that is... well ugly. Contemplating painting it and putting down a glass top, but who knows.
Something for the bedroom walls.
A new shelf/storage unit for the office - Sweetie-pie has a vintage camera/polaroid collection that needs a showcase, while providing additional workspace.
And I always have my eyes out for treasure treasure treasure!!!

Four marvelous meals (3 this summer, 1 on 12/21) at Ludobites... my faves were the chorizo/cantaloupe/cornichorn ice soup (had every time this summer), lobster medallions (omg that gelee), the tomato salad with feta mousse and both versions of fried chicken, though the version on 12/21 with the cantal polenta and mole took me to a transcendent place. If Maestro Ludo (or anyone who knows him) sees this, please consider a Ludo Comforts U truck, selling your soups and fried chicken with polenta to a happy happy public!!!
Crossroads Trader treasures (all under $50!)... most notably, a navy Gucci dress that fits me like a glove, black Donald Pliner cork wedges, Chip and Pepper wide-leg jeans (softest denim omg), Sonia Rykiel gold platform sandals, some pretty Marc Jacobs tops and a super-soft turquoise cashmere sweater.

Animal Restaurant - great inventive food and no attitude
My new favorite go-to restaurant - The Veggie Grill on Sunset at Crescent Heights. Vegan fast-ish food that will satisfy non-vegans... healthy, delicious and good for the environment. My fave is the chicken ceasar salad and I sub fried chicken for the blackened. Best faux-chicken I've had. They have a burger I will try sometime soon, but I keep ordering that salad!

Gold this, gold that and the gold other thing...
My first foray into backyard gardening that led to my foot meets pottery shard adventure. Without any doctors. stiches or drugs, I prevented infection and promoted healing with lavender oil, apple cider vinegar, tumeric, manuka honey and hand-made bandages (and boosted my immune system internally). Five months later and no regrets, the area is still tender, and I figure it will be a full year before it's 100%. Natural healing isn't speedy, but I prefer to work with my body, not against it. Life is a marathon, not a sprint.
I checked a life goal off the list in November by learning how to properly handle and shoot a handgun. As an actress, I want to look like I know what I'm doing (cause I want to be cast as a badass, of course!) and it's another skill that's worth learning well. Merci to friend Richard, who's an expert in this field (felt like I was watching the Terminator when he was shooting), for being patient with me and for loading the clips when my fingers started to hurt (yeah I'm such a girl sometimes).

My energy-healer Maggie who has made me healthier, both mentally and physically. I met her as a result of my foot injury (indirectly), so you never know what positive will emerge from a perceived negative event. I try to be grateful for everything, because life can be crazy wonderful...

Quickie Post - Shrimp Tacos and Sex in Los Feliz

After spending a lovely afternoon with friend Julia and her beau at their groovy new pad in the Los Feliz hills (OMG the view), Sweetie-pie and I went for some shrimp tacos at Best Shrimp Taco in Ensenada (and I ordered in Spanish-yay!) where we were in for a show with our dinner...

We parked on the side street, off Hillhurst, and as I was preparing to exit the car, a hot-and-heavy couple (in a Dodge... really?) making out caught my eye, and I caught theirs, apparently. What is it about "caught" couples acting indignant and staring back? Like I cared... but I did get a chuckle. It's been a long time since I've seen that level of PDA, especially from people who looked 30ish.

On to two yummy shrimp tacos and then back to the car, where it was difficult NOT to notice, the Dodge still there, steamy windows AND a zebra-print blanket rigged to give "some" privacy. Zebra print? Really? There has GOT to be a story here...

A Tale of Two Bedrooms

New view from the bed - pure heaven.

When a noisy douchebag moves into the building next door, one can either continue to get angrier and angrier by the day (which is what happened first) OR accept the situation for what it is (AFTER threatening them at 4am with HOLY FUCKING HELL) by switching the bedroom with the much-quieter office. A blessing in disguise, this much cozier space has beautiful afternoon light that filters through my neighbor's trees and better lends itself to naps, reading in bed and taking photographs. Wish now I had done this years ago... Merci Mr. Douchebag.

When a douchebag developer makes your life a noisy and dirty affair for the last 18 months, with no end in imminent sight, one can either... WHATEVER!!! Having a well-known penchant for bringing home "found" treasure, I absolutely could not resist picking up this sign that was laying in the gutter at the end of my street. As I was carting my disobedience home (hey, I'm not the one who wrecked the thing in the first place), a woman who lives right next to the construction site, saw me and cheered. Felt good. Now it lives in the new office space and inspires the artistic outlaw I aspire to be...

Autumn... at Last!!!

If you decorate, autumn will come...

October has always been my favorite month, with Halloween (and the Great Pumpkin!) being my favorite holiday. There's something magical about October sunlight and I think after an especially punishing hot summer, the cool breezes that wafted through the apartment this weekend were appreciated on a whole other level.

And what better way to celebrate the changing colors of autumn? Tomorrow I get a pedicure with my new Teal nail polish that arrived yesterday!
